這也是蠻文學的說法。
the better to 在這裡是「好讓…」「好使…」的意思。
整句的意思是：( 我靜默了一下，好細細品味我輝煌的勝利)

" .. or (else) they dry up ..." The sentence perhaps tries to say that, vampires need to hide in their graves during daylight when sun is up. And the time allowable for the vampires to travel back to their graves when sun comes up is limited to a distance of a mile. Any longer distance than a mile will take a longer time to return, which is beyond the allowable time. They will then be toasted by the sunlight, dried up to become dust. In a way, they die miserably.
